Fixing Undercut from Travel Speed Issues

Travel speed undercut occurs when welding too fast, preventing proper weld metal fill of the groove melted by the arc. Reduce travel speed or increase wire feed speed to provide adequate filler metal for the molten groove.

Speed Adjustment Steps

  1. Reduce travel speed. Allow more time for weld metal to fill the melted groove properly.
  2. Increase wire feed speed. Provide more filler metal to match the travel speed being used.
  3. Adjust technique. Use slight weaving or pause at toes to ensure proper fill.
